How to Create a UPI QR Code to Receive Payments
Accept UPI payments with a printed QR code — and understand what it does and doesn't do.

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) lets anyone in India pay from their bank account through apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and BHIM. A UPI QR code pre-fills your payment details so customers just scan, check the name and enter their PIN. This guide explains how to create one, what it contains, and how to keep it safe.
What you need
- Your UPI ID (VPA), such as
sharmastore@okaxisor9876543210@ybl. You'll find it in your UPI app's profile or settings. - Payee name — the name customers should see.
- Optionally, a fixed amount and a note.
Steps
- Open the UPI QR code generator.
- Enter your UPI ID and payee name.
- For a shop counter, leave the amount empty so customers can type it. For an invoice or a fixed-price item, enter the amount.
- Download as PNG for sharing or PDF for printing.
- Scan it with your own UPI app and confirm the name and UPI ID before displaying it.
The upi://pay format
A UPI QR code contains a deep link defined by NPCI's UPI linking specification:
upi://pay?pa=sharmastore@okaxis&pn=Sharma%20Store&am=250.00&cu=INR&tn=Order%201024
| Parameter | Meaning |
|---|---|
pa | Payee address (your UPI ID) |
pn | Payee name |
am | Amount in rupees, two decimals (optional) |
cu | Currency — always INR |
tn | Transaction note (optional) |
Spaces and special characters in names and notes must be percent-encoded (a space becomes %20). Incorrect encoding is a common reason apps show a garbled name or reject the code; MyQRGenerator handles it for you.
Personal QR vs merchant QR
A QR made from your UPI ID is a basic payment request. Banks and payment aggregators also issue merchant QR codes, which carry extra merchant identifiers and come with services like sound-box notifications, settlement reports and higher limits. If you run a business with significant volume, ask your bank about a merchant QR. Some apps may show extra warnings or limits for larger payments to personal UPI IDs. A generated QR doesn't change any of these rules — it only saves the customer from typing your ID.
What a UPI QR code does not do
- It does not process payments, confirm them or notify you — check your bank or UPI app for that.
- It does not let anyone take money from you. Paying always needs the payer's PIN in their own app.
- MyQRGenerator never sees your payment details: the code is created in your browser.
Avoiding QR payment fraud
- Protect the printed code. Fraudsters sometimes paste their own QR over a shop's. Frame or laminate it and check it regularly.
- Payers: always verify the name shown in the app before entering your PIN.
- You never need to scan a QR or enter a PIN to receive money. Anyone asking you to do so is attempting fraud.
Design and printing tips
- Keep the code black or dark on white — payment counters often have poor light.
- Print at least 5 cm wide for counter stands, larger for wall posters.
- Print your name and UPI ID as text below the code so customers can pay manually if scanning fails.
