How a shaped QR code still scans
A QR scanner doesn't care about the outline around a code. It looks for the three corner “eyes”, works out the grid from them, and reads the modules inside that square. MyQRGenerator keeps that square intact: the real code sits in the largest square that fits inside your shape, with a two-module blank gap around it. Everything outside that gap is decoration — random-looking dots that are seeded from your content, so the same text always produces the same picture.
Because the decoration sits outside the quiet zone, a scanner sees a normal code surrounded by noise it has already learned to ignore. Each design in the generator is decoded by an independent reader (jsQR) before you download, and you'll see a Scan verified badge when it passes.
Choosing the right shape
- Circle and badge — clean and logo-like; great for stickers, packaging seals and round product labels.
- Heart — wedding invitations, Valentine's offers, charity and donation cards.
- Chat bubble and Like — social profiles, WhatsApp chat links, “leave us a review” cards.
- House — real-estate signs, rental listings, guest Wi-Fi in a holiday home.
- Shield, hexagon and octagon — product authenticity tags, tech brands, event badges.
- Cloud, drop and star — weather, water and kids' brands, or any design that needs something playful.
Size: shaped codes need more room
The shape adds decoration around the code, so the scannable square is only part of the printed area — roughly half its width for a heart or star. Print a shaped code larger than a plain one: if a square code would be 2.5 cm wide, make the shaped version about 4–5 cm. Our QR code size guide explains the distance rule in detail.
Tips for reliable shaped codes
- Keep strong contrast: a dark foreground on a light background. Avoid light-on-dark colour schemes.
- Short content makes bigger, easier modules. Link to a short URL rather than a long tracking URL.
- Use error correction M or higher; switch to H if you also add a logo.
- Download SVG or PDF for print so the outline and modules stay sharp at any size.
- Test the printed proof with two or three different phones before a large print run.
