How to make a Wi-Fi QR code

  1. Type your network name (SSID) exactly as it appears in your Wi-Fi list — it's case-sensitive.
  2. Choose the security type (usually WPA/WPA2/WPA3) and enter the password.
  3. Wait for Scan verified, then download and print.
  4. Test it: scan with a phone that isn't already connected (or “forget” the network first).

Where to put it

Reception desks, café tables, Airbnb welcome books, meeting rooms and classroom doors. Print it at least 3 × 3 cm for close-range scanning; see our print size guide.

What's inside the code

For a network called Cafe Guest with password coffee;2024 the encoded text is WIFI:T:WPA;S:Cafe Guest;P:coffee\;2024;;. Read the full Wi-Fi QR code guide for details.

Frequently asked questions

Which phones can scan a Wi-Fi QR code?

The built-in camera on iPhones (iOS 11 and later) and on most Android phones (Android 10 and later) recognise Wi-Fi codes and offer to join. Older Android phones can use Google Lens or a scanner app.

Is it safe to put my Wi-Fi password in a QR code?

The code contains the password in plain text, so anyone who scans it can read it — just like a password written on a card. Use it for guest networks, and change the password if the printed code leaves your control. MyQRGenerator never uploads it.

My password contains ; or : — will it work?

Yes. Special characters (\ ; , : ") are escaped automatically according to the Wi-Fi QR format.

Which security type should I pick?

Choose WPA/WPA2/WPA3 for almost every modern router. Pick WEP only for very old equipment, and None for open networks without a password.

What does 'Hidden network' do?

It tells the phone the network doesn't broadcast its name, so it should try to connect anyway. Only enable it if your router hides the SSID.
